Cheque facility won't be withdrawn, says the govt
It is a matter of relief that the Union Government has clarified that cheque facility won't be withdrawn.

There were stray reports that an overenthusiastic government favaouring total digitalisation may go in for banning the cheque books.


It is gratifying to note that the government won't proceed with the reforms this way.

Three more cases pending against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh
There are three more cases pending against the 50-year-old head of the quasi-religious Dera sect. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the three cases. Two of the cases pertain to conspiring murders, while the third is over alleged castration of 400 Dera followers at the sect’s headquarters in Haryana’s Sirsa.

In the two murder cases, which are in the final stages of trial before a special CBI court in Panchkula, Singh could be awarded life sentence. The castration case is still under investigation.

The flamboyant guru, who starred in pop videos and his own “Messenger of God” movie franchise, is accused of plotting the killing of a Sirsa-based journalist and one of his followers for trying to expose his “wrongdoings” and “sexual exploitations.”

Ram Chandra Chhatrapati, editor of a Hindi evening newspaper Poora Sach, was killed in July 2002 for publishing stories on unlawful activities inside Dera premises, including rape allegations.

Ten years' RI each has been awarded to him in two rape cases. These sentences have to be undergone consecutively.

Fine of Rs 15 lakh has also been awarded to the girls.

A special CBI court on Monday sentenced Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The dera chief was convicted of rape on August 25. CBI judge Jagdeep Singh was flown to Sunaria Jail, where a special court room was set up for pronouncing the quantum of sentence in the case.

The administration has issued a stern warning and is keeping vigil in the states of Haryana, Punjab and Delhi ahead of the announcement of sentence keeping in mind the violence that broke out after the verdict was announced where 38 people were killed.
